"Argentine mining: the new exporting front that is beginning to gain traction"

By Julian Galeano

Portada

The Argentine mining sector is undergoing a period of strong expansion. At the beginning of 2026, sector exports recorded one of the best starts in recent years, mainly driven by gold, silver, and lithium. In January alone, external sales surpassed USD 800 million, with a year-on-year increase of nearly 80%, according to various sector reports.

Genuine dollars for an economy that needs them

The jump is not explained by a single factor. On one hand, gold has regained a central place in the exporting mining basket. On the other hand, lithium continues to function as a strategic bet linked to the energy transition and global battery demand. In January 2026, lithium exports reached USD 96 million, the best January recorded for that mineral.

The underlying issue is political and economic: Argentina needs to generate foreign currency through production, not just through debt or financial assistance. In this context, mining appears as one of the sectors with the greatest potential to contribute genuine dollars. Some reports indicate that accumulated mining exports reached USD 1.513 billion in the first two months of 2026, with a year-on-year improvement of 79.9%.

The opportunity exists, but it is not guaranteed. For mining to become a sustained engine, the country needs clear rules, infrastructure, agile permits, tax stability, and legal security. Argentina has resources, but it still competes with countries like Chile and Peru, which have a much more established mining tradition. Even with recent growth, the regional gap remains a challenge.

A variable to watch closely

Mining does not alone resolve Argentina's structural problems, but it can become a relevant piece of a broader export matrix. If the country manages to stabilize the macroeconomy, attract private capital, and maintain stable conditions, the sector can contribute jobs, investment, infrastructure, and foreign currency.

The key point will be to see if this growth is just a rebound due to international prices or if it becomes a long-term trend. For now, the numbers show that mining has ceased to be a distant promise and has begun to appear as a concrete variable within Argentina's economic future.
