You took Mass, and now what?

Sergio Massa took over last Wednesday as Minister of Economy with enlarged faculties, compared to his predecessors during this management. Now he has the reins of Production and Agriculture, Ganaderia and Fishing. In addition, his sphere of influence extends to other areas, where he managed to put employees who respond to him, such as Matias Tombolini in the Internal Trade Secretariat and Silvia Royón in Energy.

The main question of this situation is whether the -new - re-release of the Front of All is enough to stop the economic crisis and twist the course, which would imply controlling the increase in inflation and boost a path of recovery of the purchasing power of workers, whose wages seem to be being vaccinated for years by a large automatic weapon. Secondly, it is worth reflecting on the role of the president from now on. Finally, and although in Argentina a year equivalgam forty elsewhere in the world, it is up to the question by the elections of 2023: if Massa has an “exitosa” management, are you likely to surprise an opposition that is already choosing a new decoration for Oliveiras?

For Lucas Klobovs, political analyst in Polirquia, " The arrival of Massa implies that the Front of All decided to validate orthodox or pragmatic measures to prevent the situation. Kirchnerism is making implied support, without giving great statements, but with small gestures, such as the photo of Cristina Kirchner with Massa. If it goes wrong, they will deny support.”

In its first week, the new minister announced the lines of its economic programme, most well-orthodox, which includes four axes: fiscal order, commercial surplus, strengthening reserves and development with inclusion. In this sense, he stated that the objective of the 2.5 budget deficit will be met, will continue to be applied with the reduction of energy subsidies, the debt will be taken in dollars with the CICM and the social plans will be “resorted”.

For economist Frederico Furiase, the short-term challenge is “Manage incentives to a sustained settlement of the harvest that allows to accumulate reserves. For this, it should meet the front would change: late or early there will be to improve the type of real change". However, in the first week, he managed to get the financial dollars and free him to fall, while public debt obligations were re-evaluated.

At the same time, the government cannot neglect the needs of the growing low and middle classes. Because so far, the guidelines point to the “market” and do not respond to your daily concerns, which is delicate in a country where efforts are less and less rewarded. In this field, their relationship is at stake with the popular sectors, which they say represent, and also with part of the coalition.

João Grabois threatened to break up with the Front of All in Deputies if Mass does not drive the universal basic salary. This would cause the loss of three legislators and Together for the change to become the first minority. “If we lose the sense of the militancy, we lose the soul of what we do”, stated on Radio With Vos.

And your disappointment is understandable. What did the president and his cabinet end up validating what he criticized, supporting an economic trail similar to that of Martín Guzmán and Silvina Batakis? It can be thought that the most annoying for the vice president was not the "sendero", but the President's speediness to lead and act politically: the permanent contradictions, the lack of surprise and the insipid government communication, which hammered its own and prevailed in the sectors of power.

In this sense, a possible arrangement between the three axes of officialism to unlock political empantanation may have been that the former president of the Chamber of Deputies is now the one who makes the important decisions and Alberto Fernandez is prophetically subordinated to it. The president's erratic decision-making rhythm worsened economic problems and perhaps Batakis' arrival was his last big move. “There was a strategy error when Guzmán resigned. There, Albert had the chance to appoint Mass not to show himself in extreme weakness. He was a minister and another came. But he elected Batakis, the market gave his back and then went out to get a saviour.”explained Klobovs.

The new Minister of Economic Affairs, of the obvious presidential ambitions, must overcome several obstacles in the face of 2023, which imply to be content with one's own and others, in order to keep a living red conjuncture stable. It remains to be seen its ability to negotiate and pragmatism in an uncertain world. Although, according to his new mother-in-law, Moria Casán, of political waist, he has a hula-hula.

“Massa has been with a very deteriorating image for several years. A growth in its image depends on having small achievements in economic matters, as inflation declines a little and that the dollar does not increase. If you can more or less reassure the economy in some basic parameters, position yourself as a competitive candidate”, took Klobovs.
