Justice cannot remain in the past: law and technology unite at Legalthon.

Technology and Law

Technological acceleration permeates all sectors of social life, and artificial intelligence today is an operational reality in multiple fields. In a world flooded with data and digital stimuli, where virtual crimes arise that are difficult to detect and even judge, the judicial system risks becoming obsolete if it does not incorporate these tools judiciously.

The tension between "the legal," associated with traditional methods based on norms, principles, and guarantees, and "the technological," characterized by the modern, the automated, uncertain but also efficient if used wisely, poses a central challenge. Justice, at times, takes months or years to respond to claims due to the methods employed. This delay in the process generates a lack of legitimacy in society when its timelines are incompatible with current needs. In this way, the judiciary loses its protective character, leading to the belief that if it does not adapt, it loses credibility.

Thus, linking law and technology becomes essential. It is not enough to apply artificial intelligence (AI) as an auxiliary tool: it is necessary to think about legal frameworks, controls, transparency, and accountability. Justice is repositioned by using new, more efficient methods.

The Advances of AI in the Argentine Judicial Field

At the national level, the Attorney General's Office created the Artificial Intelligence Program of the Public Prosecutor's Office through Resolution PGN 14/25 (May 14, 2025). Its objective is to implement an institutional strategy for the incorporation of AI in management tasks, automation of processes, analysis of judicial data, generation of reports, and interoperability.

Additionally, in the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Province of Buenos Aires, the Attorney General issued Resolution PG No. 1475/25, which establishes a regulatory framework for the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in that agency. The institutional platform "ChatIA" is adopted as the only authorized channel, with user control, interaction auditing, and encryption.

On the other hand, in the Attorney General's Office of Buenos Aires City, there is a General Directorate of Artificial Intelligence, whose task is to plan, implement, and supervise AI solutions to optimize institutional processes.

A Space to Think about the Future: Legalthon 2025

In this context, the UBA Faculty of Law will host Legalthon 2025, an Academic Hackathon for Decentralized Governance to be held on October 18. The event is jointly organized by the Faculty, the Cardano Community, and the FinGurú Education Foundation.

The initiative aims for law students and related careers to work in teams to put into practice interdisciplinary visions such as thinking about smart contracts, mechanisms for digital governance, and innovative proposals related to the legal field.

Legalthon is shaping up to be a space for training and debate on the challenges of law in the digital age, where possible professional futures in fields such as legaltech, digital governance, blockchain, or regulatory design are explored.
