Karina Milei under the spotlight: accused of influence peddling and owner of power in La Rosada

The sister of Javier Milei, Karina Milei

A meteoric rise: From the shadows to the epicenter of power

Karina Milei has always been an enigmatic figure. In the shadow of her brother, Javier, she accompanied each of his steps until he reached the Presidency. She is described as the strategist, the person in charge of the political machinery of La Libertad Avanza, a woman without an elective position but with unprecedented power in the recent history of the country. However, her role has been the subject of increasing scrutiny, which today reaches its peak with a formal accusation of influence peddling and bribery.

Mónica Frade and Maximiliano Ferraro, deputies from the Civic Coalition, brought the situation to justice. They argue that Karina Milei, sheltered by her position as Secretary General of the Presidency and, above all, as the sister of the President, manages access to the President in a discretionary manner, demanding payments in exchange for meetings. The accusations also link her to the $LIBRA cryptocurrency scandal.

The $LIBRA scandal: a web of power, money, and favors

The $LIBRA case shook the political landscape when it was revealed that people close to the Government were promoting a cryptocurrency linked to the President himself. Trader Hayden Davis claimed in leaked conversations that he paid bribes to gain presidential advertising on social media. The complaint by Frade and Ferraro claims that Karina Milei facilitated this access and collected commissions in return.

Adding to this is the testimony of goldsmith Juan Carlos Pallarolls, who declared that the President's sister demanded a payment of $2,000 to arrange a meeting with the President. Journalist Cristina Pérez also mentioned that "there are people in the Government's circle who offer or ask for money to bring businessmen closer to the President." If the presidential agenda is exclusively in Karina's hands, can the Government guarantee the transparency of its decisions?

An informal but omnipresent power structure

Karina Milei's influence goes beyond managing the agenda. She is not a minister or legislator, but acts as one of the most powerful figures in the country. Her opinion is decisive in decision-making, to the point that several officials admit privately that "without Karina's approval, nothing moves forward." This raises a central question: How far does her influence extend, and what are her legal limits?

The Public Ethics Law establishes that officials must prioritize the public interest over personal interests and prohibits the receipt of undue benefits. If the allegations are confirmed, we would be facing a textbook case of violation of this norm. Justice must now determine whether Karina Milei used her position for personal or family purposes.

Candidacy and parliamentary immunity as a shield?

As the investigation progresses, rumors arise in the libertarian circle that Karina Milei could be a candidate for deputy in 2025. A well-thought-out move that would grant her parliamentary immunity and, consequently, a shield against potential criminal charges.

Although her role has been key in the political construction of the ruling party, a potential candidacy would reinforce the perception that in Argentina, political power is a family matter. If her candidacy is confirmed, would Milei be using democratic institutions as a refuge from Justice?

The future of a key figure and the presidential dilemma

The Karina Milei case not only affects her image but also that of her brother. The President, who built his career under the banner of "the caste" and "transparency," faces his greatest contradiction. Can he maintain his sister in office amidst such serious accusations?

In a country with a long history of corruption scandals, the outcome of this case will be crucial for the future of the Government. If Karina Milei is innocent, the ruling party must provide compelling evidence to disprove the accusations. If she is guilty, the responsibility for her continued position will fall directly on the President.

Time and Justice will have the final word. But one thing is clear: Karina Milei is no longer just "The Boss" in the shadows. She is one of the protagonists of contemporary Argentine political history, and the fate of her power is at stake.
