Illegal fishing, the Achilles heel of the Argentine Navy?

Argentina has a problem, which for over 10 years has not been able to remedy

According to reports of international entities as Financial Transparency Coalition (FTC) and reports of national government entities, such as Ministry of Finance, fishing illegal, undeclared and unregulated, or UU for its English acronym, is one of the key concepts that the Argentine Navy cannot control.

It is estimated that U.S. fishing in Argentine territorial waters produces losses from billions of dollars to 2,600 million each year. The FTC work details that Argentina has one of the most important fishing areas in the world, with great abundance and diversity of marine life.

" The commercial fishing industry is driven by four species representing 75% of the country's total fishing: fishing, fishing, fishing and shrimp. Fishing is the second largest in the world by volume”, describes the report. The calamar, the main goal in the country and a strategic species in the food chain and in the biodiversity of the Argentinean Sea, is causing a large-scale collapse in the marine life systems in the South Atlantic,” explains the FTC report.

According to licensee Depietri, an expert in Argentine national defense and international security, IUU fishing tackles Security and Argentine National Defense. “Each time it is more evident that we should focus on upgrading and modernizing the forces and that, despite the constant economic crisis historically, the resources to defend national interests must be constant,” the specialist explained.

Given data from the Argentine Navy for years, an average of 300 fisheries, with Asian and European flags, have entered the Exclusive Economic Zone to carry out illegal fishing activities, but recently the number has increased to 500 vessels. Having regard to the amount of ingressive vessels and the last data of White Paper of Defense Argentina 2015, resources can be scaled to patrol the Navy and the Prefecture.

The corbeta used by the Navy are being replaced by coastal guard patrol vessels with new technology, which at the same time work together with patrol aircraft, thanks to the Maritime Joint Command, belonging to the State Major Argentinian set, body responsible for surveillance of Argentine waters, source of the Argentine Navy.

We can see, that, the guarding tasks by both the Navy and the Prefecture, are carried out jointly by the previously mentioned organism. Illegal fishing is in the collective imagination, but misinformation leads the population to understand that the forces in charge of monitoring do not fulfill their roles.
