Sturzenegger has a remarkable track record, having held high-ranking positions in all the recent governments that have culminated in a resounding failure: Chief Economist at YPF (1995, Menem); Secretary of Economic Policy of the Nation (2001, De la Rúa); President of the BCRA (2015, Macri); and he is today a foundational piece of the current government, being the main author of the Law of Bases and Starting Points and an ideological colleague of President Javier Milei.
Without delving into the possibility that 'Sturze' is a jinx, one can infer, without much effort, that the man has missed and failed miserably throughout his entire path in public administration; in such character, it is wise to raise an eyebrow at everything he says or claims.
Just a few days ago, at the World Economic Forum, Sturzenegger set Argentina's position on Artificial Intelligence and the possibility of regulating it, stating that "its only task is to ensure that no Artificial Intelligence law appears (sic)."
Technocrats in general, and Federico in particular, share a characteristic: they only know how to charge forward, like a bull in a bullfight.
Generative Artificial Intelligences - the recent models that have made a popular 'boom', like ChatGPT and Gemini - have proven to be, in record time, a resounding failure: they did not become, as the elite wanted, the salvation and wonder they imagined.
The concentration and demand for resources and the environmental impact that these new LLMs (Large Language Models) inherently possess have proven not to correlate with what they produce. For many years, Artificial Intelligence has been used to automate processes such as research in science, effectively exponentially accelerating the time it takes to research a disease or an organism; the little robots that answer you and draw are stories of now, and they are the problem and the failure.
Not content with this, these new machine learning models also pose a (further) risk to women and their welfare in a society that is already known to be patriarchal: with these new Artificial Intelligences being able to create, from scratch, images of non-existent women in highly customizable contexts, and also being enabled to intervene in images of real women, hyper-commercialization, objectification, and distortion of female bodies are affirmed.
Today, in a trick backed by Elon Musk himself, one of the most powerful men on the planet, anyone can strip a woman of her clothing without her consent as long as they have a photo of her. Likewise, a person with minimal technical knowledge and a powerful computer can unleash their perversities without limit or oversight. Women are today much more vulnerable than they have been in a long time, and it is solely and exclusively the responsibility of people like Musk and Zuckerberg, with pawns like Sturzenegger who pave the way and clean their mouths with a napkin.
It is appropriate - and pertinent - to make known that the minister is completely and utterly unaware of everything related to Artificial Intelligence, both from a technical-rigorous standpoint and from a socio-political perspective, and that any statement or analysis he makes should be ignored and/or discredited. Federico is little more than a mere slave and spokesperson for the desires of the business elite, so everything he is going to say is calibrated to what the failed elite of Argentina wants to hear and achieve.
It is of vital importance to take immediate action in the opposite direction to this kind of advance. This management is already another mark of failure in Sturzenegger’s record; let us ensure that it is the last one.
