“5S” The discipline of order

What are the fives?

The “5S” is a Japanese method of origin whose purpose lies in the importance of making us understand the improvement of processes through order and cleaning through the implementation of 5 steps (ess). We are not simply saying that to improve it is necessary to order and clean, but what seeks this methodology is to be able to transform our way of thinking, our intrinsic culture rooted in bad habits, so that our actions naturally tend to do the right in relation to the maintenance of our environment.

Where can we apply it?

The "5S" can be put into practice in different environments which can be, manufactures, deposits, offices, vehicles, bags or backpacks, in the public way, and even in our home.

Why are 5 S?

Each of the "s" are steps that have been established to apply actions whose implementation will reap the way to reach the defined goal. In a practical way each "s" will be launched, and so we can go visualizing and understanding how order and cleaning should be a natural factor to ensure success in a disordered environment. Each of the steps in its original language begins with the letter "s", so the name of the methodology.

Let's see what each of the 5 steps are:

  1. SEIRI → ClassifyWhat's for me?
  2. SEITON → OrderWhat serves me
  3. SEISO → Clear: Once ordered
  4. SEIKETSU → Stay: Identify the established
  5. SHITSUKE → Discipline: Change old habits through the notion and understanding of previous steps
We deepened in each of them.

1 SEIRI: CLASIFICAR

The goal of the 1st"S is to keep only what is truly useful for the task we are going to accomplish or what we use daily. What we do not use daily we separate it according to the time of use, and if we never use it permanently. In this way, we are classifying the necessary of the unnecessary. For example: How many times do we see things we no longer use in our home and leave them because it gives us longing to take? If we get away from these things, we could gain space by keeping only what we need. One of the ways to facilitate understanding to achieve this "S" is with a number of specific questions such as: Will it do me or won't it? Do I need everything I have? Are there things I don't use? Are these things I use most often?

With the application of this stage, we can:

  • Prevent accidents by the presence of unnecessary objects.
  • Facilitate the search for tools, materials, documents and other elements of daily use.
  • Reduce time in search of any type of objects.

2nd “S” SEITON: ORDEN

Since we separate what doesn't fit us, we can order what's left. The order can do it effectively by attending the motto "a place for every thing and every thing in its place". In this way, we can define places for ordering according to: frequency of use (though more I use what I need closer to it) or by family of elements (elements that are of a particular family must go together); for example: the provision of a toolboard in a well-ordered workshop will allow the tools to be visible to the naked eye.

With the application of this stage, we can:

  • Locate the elements I need according to the frequency of use.
  • Improve the image of my place.
  • Decrease the loss of tools, documents and other elements.
3 _After separating what I do not use and ordering what we do, we have to eliminate the dirt. This means keeping the locations and elements in clean conditions fit, dust-free and muggy.

4 "S" SEIKETSU: _

During this stage, the elementary will set standards to ensure that the processes are fulfilled. We can understand as standard the appropriate way or method used to ensure the correct proceeding of what we define. For example: Carteles that indicate the exit of a site, identifications that indicate the speed allowed on a route, cartulas in the manuals of the offices that indicate their content, identification in the gondolas of supermarkets to know where each product is located. These are just a few examples of implementing standards. In short, it is to identify places / elements and define processes so that we know we should do and how we should proceed.

By implementing this step we can:

  • Return to your place the objects or documents used
  • Identify the simple eye when we miss something
  • Know how to proceed and face a particular process

5th “S” SHITSUKE: DISCIPLINA

The last "s" is discipline. The discipline is to conduct according to the values learned. It means that our way of thinking should change to be able to sustain in time the previous 4 "s". If there is no change of autthic mindset to adapt to order, nothing will serve to implement the above 4 steps, because at a short time we will return to the state in which we met. It is necessary to convert in habit the learned. We must think that the difficult is not to arrive, but to stay in time. Adopting the discipline is to be aware that the order is won in every way.

If we could all be aware of the importance of order and cleaning in a society, we would certainly be much better. But it's never too late. The change we can start right now!
