"Echoes of Two Canyons": the new scientific expedition that will explore the Argentine Sea

The Argentine Sea once again becomes the protagonist of a scientific milestone. Following the success of the Continental Slope IV mission, which dazzled the public with live broadcasts from nearly 4,000 meters deep, a new team from CONICET and the Schmidt Ocean Institute embarks on an unprecedented expedition: "Echoes of Two Canyons." This campaign, taking place during October 2025, promises to reveal secrets of the ocean floor off the coasts of Río Negro and Chubut, in an area as fascinating as it is unknown.

The mission focuses on two imposing geological formations: the submarine canyons Bahía Blanca and Almirante Brown, located about 500 kilometers offshore. According to Télam, these canyons are "biodiversity corridors" that connect the continental shelf with the oceanic slope, facilitating the exchange of nutrients and energy between ecosystems.

The vessel Falkor (too), equipped with cutting-edge technology, and the underwater robot ROV SuBastian—capable of diving to thousands of meters and transmitting images in ultra-high definition—will be the main tools of this adventure. According to Clarín Ciencia, the robot will collect samples of water, sediments, and marine organisms, allowing for the study of natural ocean fertilization and the role of these areas in the global carbon cycle.

One of the most innovative aspects of the expedition is its live broadcast on YouTube, where the public can follow the dives in real-time. This initiative, highlighted by Infobae, aims to bring science closer to society and raise awareness about the conservation of marine ecosystems, especially in the context of climate change and fishing pressure on the South Atlantic.

Researchers emphasize that this mission holds not just scientific but also strategic and environmental value. The data obtained could serve as a basis for future sustainable fishery management policies, protection of vulnerable species, and planning of marine protected areas. The information collected will be shared openly, strengthening international cooperation in the study of the oceans.

The "Echoes of Two Canyons" expedition represents a fundamental step in Argentine marine research. With cutting-edge technology, an interdisciplinary team, and active public participation, the country reaffirms its commitment to the knowledge and preservation of the Argentine Sea. As expressed by the scientists from CONICET: “Each dive is a journey to the heart of the unknown, an opportunity to understand and protect the ocean that defines our identity as a coastal nation.”

In times when environmental care is more urgent than ever, this mission seeks not only to discover but also to inspire: to demonstrate that science can be a shared adventure, where each finding in the depths is also a call to protect the life that inhabits them.
