Artificial Intelligence and Robotics: the future has just arrived

Currently, and a few years ago, the world is talking about Artificial Intelligence. The right thing is that in the last time this topic achieved greater reach given the launch of Chat GPT (a language model that launched OpenAI). " Did you see this talking machine? is smarter than a human,” “We’ll end up on the street, the robots will steal our work.”, “We don’t have to study, with gpt we can do everything”, These are some of the common comments that were heard after the peak of AI caused by Chat GPT

In this article, we will deny (or affirm) if the robots will supplant us in our jobs and everyday activities. In addition, it will speak of the past, current and future of the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.

Quote and foot: What is Artificial Intelligence and Robotics? How do they connect?

Artificial intelligence is the ability of machines to process data and make a decision as a human. Look, you don't create it that way because you do, but rather algorithms created by people to decide based on what they learn (i.e. many data). Robotics is the creation of programmed robots to perform physical tasks in replacement of the activity performed by a human. AI and robotics strengthen their relationship by complementing themselves to create autonomous systems that can perform complex tasks in any domain.

Are Artificial Intelligence and Robotics transforming our reality?

A few years ago, when at my university I saw a dog-like robot learning to walk like a baby, my mind was filled with questions. This moment meant understanding that the applications of robotics with AI could be very useful in society, and in different areas such as education, health, research, and industrial.

Since the 1950s, from Alan Turing to today, there have been significant advances in the fusion of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, which resulted in the creation of autonomous robots that can make their decisions and adapt to the context.

In our country, research and study in these areas are very optimistic. In 2022, the University of San Andrés (UdeSA) presented the first autonomous vehicle of Argentina imported from the United States with the aim of leading the AI revolution, together with the launch of the university career of Engineering in Artificial Intelligence.

Possible applications complementing these disciplines are very interesting, since through algorithms learning, one can achieve that a physical robot learns a determined behavior and adapts to the context of the activity that is necessary to do. In the same line, it is also important to highlight those applications where a person cannot accomplish this task, for example, space explorations.

Currently, there are different industries where these disciplines are being applied remarkably:

  • In medicine, AI is being used to diagnose diseases by images, and robots for surgical interventions.
  • In the manufacturing industry, robots are used for ensamble tasks, painting, transfer. In this case, robots with artificial vision (AI) are used to detect objects and perform a picking
  • In safety, we have the drones trained with artificial vision to monitor and monitor areas.
  • In the automobile industry, autonomous vehicles are very important for the transfer of people and objects.
The AI, along with robotics, are changing the way we interact in all areas of our work, from industrial automation to service robotics. Specifically, these two disciplines are revolutionizing the way to live, work and study.

Ethical and social challenges of AI and Robotics

Although what is expected is applications for the benefit of society, there are risks to be taken into account in the field of these disciplines.

The main challenge is ethical and legal, given the lack of regulations for security and privacy there are risks that the data is stolen and/or misused. In the same line, there is a lot of responsibility for people who create AI because they can make biased decisions and cause consequences in society.

On the other hand, there may be challenges related to employability. Many people wonder if AI advances can lead to a decrease in jobs. Contrary to what is thought, these advances will also create new jobs and help current jobs evolve, thus promoting education and training of people.

In conclusion, it is necessary and important that these themes be addressed to ensure that the use of AI and robotics is responsible and safe, with regulations and standards, to achieve a future with interesting social impacts.

WhatYou expect us here too much?

The future of these disciplines is very promising, as it will allow humans to delegate dangerous, reiterative or boring tasks, and be able to focus on working time in other important activities.

In short, it is certain that in the future we will see more surprising applications that arise from the fusion between AI and Robotics, with the desire that they be promising for society and the evolution of human life. The possibilities are endless, from more intelligent and autonomous robots to more advanced and precise artificial intelligence systems. As these disciplines continue to advance, it is important to continue to explore their potential and be mindful of the challenges and risks they entail.
